Date: 10/17/14

Source: InfoWorld, Softpedia

Description:

According to personal experience as well as some articles found in researching the issue, Microsoft is throwing error code 80242016 when windows update tries to install KB2952664.

InfoWorld’s Woody Leonhard wrote about this patch failure and how it’s simply defined as a “Compatibility update for upgrading Windows 7” but provides no other details. He then goes on to state that Microsoft’s MVP TaurArian and dvk01 state that this is simply a patch to help you update your existing system to Windows 8 or Windows 10 and that if you do not intend to update to those newer OS’s then there is no need to have this patch on your system. Apparently, it is intended as a precheck for the update to the new OS to ensure your system is suitable for the upgrade.

Impacted Users: Systems running Windows 7

Mitigation Procedure:

Some readers of the article report that in order to fix it, one has to first uninstall previously installed KC2952664 update attempts, Reboot the computer, and then install the new release via Windows Update.

Others have elected to hide the update until MS comes out with an enhanced fix for this issue.

UPDATE:

On October 16, the same author writes that the KB2952664 was actually originally released in April of this year but was revised for this month’s patch Tuesday. The new article has an enhanced instruction set to fix this issue. However, before attempting this work please check with your helpdesk to ensure the action is appropriate.
